Homework

NOTE:  I collected the reading logs today so I could go over them and see how everyone is doing towards their reading goals for this semester.  By the end of the 3rd quarter in March, everyone should have read 3 FICTION and 4 NON-FICTION books for the quarter.  I will return the logs tomorrow so you can record what you read tonight.  If you didn't bring in your log today to class, please bring it in tomorrow.

2.  M - Circle Graph (Front and Back)

3.  RR - Weekly Reading Response due by Friday

Remember:  All reading responses should be written in a form of a letter to Mr. England.  It should include what you have been reading, the author's message, a connection to the book, and a recommendation.

PS - Thank you parents for taking the time to go over the mid-quarter progress reports.  A quick note, the Class Dojo points are based on your child's behavior in class and is unrelated to the homework.  Points are given for good actions (such as staying on task, team work, doing morning routine quietly, etc) while points are taken away for actions that do not meet expectations in the classroom (such as excessively talking out of turn or not raising your hand first, saying negative things to classmates, and not using class time productively).  Please let me know if you have any further questions regarding this system.

Scholastic

Hello everyone!
I updated the C-21-DERFUL blog to include easy access for everyone to order Scholastic Books!  I hope this is useful to everyone since I don't believe 5th grade has been getting Scholastic catalogs (sorry, I didn't realize this until today!).  Anyway, ordering online is very easy and is super helpful in earning points for our classroom so we can get some new books for our class library.

All you have to do is click on the banner now located on the top of the blog and it will take you directly to the Scholastic Page.  If you've signed up already for Scholastic Online in the past, all you have to do is login using that account and type in our class code which is:

LZTF2

If you haven't used the online order form before, then click on the banner at the top of the blog and go to "register now". After you are signed up (it's free of course), you can enter the 5-digit code above in red to access our class and get the latest monthly flyer (we use the one called "ARROW" in 5th grade).  All orders are due at the end of each month.

Again, we get extra points for our class if you order this way which allows me to use those points to purchase new books for everyone to read.  Please let me know if you have any questions about ordering, or comments about the program.  I hope this is an easier way to ensure that your child becomes a lifelong reader!

Sincerely,

Mr. England

PS - Your child can also use our in-class economy system England Bucks to purchase a coupon for a FREE book (up to $5) or they might get a chance to earn a coupon for free when we play Homeworkopoly.  So there are many different ways to earn free books.  Mahalo!

homework

1.  BC - read and log 30 min

2.  SP - 1 activity

3.  M - WS front and [front and back] pie chart

Aloha all.  I just wanted to update parents on some things going on in the classroom.  Starting Thursday   our class will be accepting donations for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.  For every $1 your child donates, they will get a star for them to put their name on it for it to be posted in the room.  Also, they will receive a raffle ticket.  The donations will be going on until the 15th.  Prizes included in the raffle I believe include a Nintendo DSi, and various other things.

Also tomorrow, the students will receive a survey in class where they can leave comments about what they think about their learning in class.  Every student at Ewa Beach Elementary will receive this survey.  Your child will also be receiving a sealed survey to take home.  If you have the opportunity, please take the time to answer it.  There is a postage free envelope inside so you can send it back for free, or you can send it back to school with your child, and I will send it in.  The school will be reporting parents feedback, so I would really welcome your comments and response.  As an incentive, your child will have a chance to earn $20 England Bucks (used for in-class incentives) if you complete the survey and let me know you sent it in (you can leave a note letting me know or leave a message in your child's Daily Planner).  Thank you for all your continual support!

Finally, it seems that there might have been a little confusion about the field trip to the Honolulu Academy of Arts.  Two of our fifth grade classes are going tomorrow 2/7 while Mrs. Matsumoto and our class will be going on Friday 2/22.  Sorry for any misunderstanding or confusion this might have caused.
